Butterfly Series
“If a butterfly flutters its wings in Brazil, could it cause a tornado in Texas?” Small actions leading to significant consequences are sometimes referred to as the butterfly effect. This series acknowledges that small touches can create profound outcomes. Butterflying.
All the cut-out paintings in this series are be made in precisely the same way. The individual jigsaw-type pieces are cut out with a laser machine out of Masonite. Initially, all the paintings will be the same. Pieces in the first painting are painted with twelve different flat colors. The second painting uses eight of the colors in the original artwork and introduces four new colors. The process continues until the fifth painting has completely different colored pieces from the first painting in the series.
There is a wonderful miracle process associated with the caterpillar in its transformation through the interactions of the imaginal cells to become the butterfly.
Imagine in the cut-out paintings that the individual colored pieces represent the imaginal cells coming together to form a finished painting—a butterfly.
All of us can butterfly. No matter how small, we can change “our” world.
